The MASWCD Leadership Institute
is a partnership with the University of
Minnesota Extension Service that provides individuals with skills to excel
as leaders in conservation.
BACKGROUND
In 1995, MASWCD began development of a leadership program with the goal of
enhancing the leadership and capabilities of SWCDs in Minnesota. MASWCD
realized that in order to have a strong organization, we needed to keep the
leadership moving and growing. Understanding that being a leader takes
hard work and guidance, MASWCD worked with the University of Minnesota Extension
Service to craft a several month program (eight two-day institutes) that would
bring to SWCD participants the necessary skills to be leaders in the
conservation movement in Minnesota. The overall design was structured to
support individual and organizational leadership development and to provide an
opportunity for participants to apply the ideas and skills they are learning to
actual SWCD priority issues they identify during the program. The
first leadership program took place April, 1996 - September, 1997.
MAINTAINING MOMENTUM
The programs have been extremely well received by the participants and have
continued to spur interest among the membership. Additional institutes

FROM THE STATE TO THE NATIONAL LEVEL
In addition to the state level
institute, in 2000, MASWCD decided it was time to take those leadership
program graduates the next step and developed a "Washington DC
Leadership Institute." This program introduced participants to how
conservation and natural resource issues are addressed at the national
level and how he/she can impact those issues from their local SWCDs.
A second Washington DC Leadership Institute was conducted in September
2005. The third, fourth and fifth Washington DC programs took place in March
of 2007, 2008 and 2009 as part of the regular eight session institute.
